October's book suggestions

This month our book suggestions have a geography theme. We have three books that can be used to build children’s understanding of rivers across the primary age range. Either use the planning provided to include them in your geography lessons, or use your reading lessons to consolidate children’s geographical knowledge.

New Books

A River by Marc Martin

Key stage 1, Geography

This poetic text will take your class on an imaginary journey through different landscapes to the sea. Children will develop an understanding of a variety of physical and human features as well as being introduced to different uses of rivers through the stunning illustrations.

The Rhythm of the Rain by Grahame Baker-Smith

Lower key stage 2, Geography

This enchanting story follows Issac’s jar of water from the mountains to the sea. While children will love learning about the water cycle through this beautiful book, there are many opportunities to either introduce or reinforce a variety of concepts linked to science, geography and history.

Amazing Rivers by Julie Vosburgh Agnone & Kerry Hyndman

Upper key stage 2, Geography

Older children will learn about features of rivers and the interaction between physical and human geography in more detail by reading about rivers from around the world. Our planning also contains suggestions for using the book to complement learning in science, history and other areas of geography.
