New Post

This month’s book suggestions give you a flavour of how stories can be used in music lessons. These books would help you make a creative start to your music teaching this year, as well as being lovely stories to read with your new class. If you do use them, or if you have suggestions for other stories to use in music, let us know how you got on @TheTeachersColl on Twitter.

New Books

Key stage 1, Music

This story takes the reader through the various sounds heard in the city at night. Our planning takes you through how to use the book to inspire a collaborative class performance, with the children selecting instruments to represent each different sound and exploring simple dynamics.

Once Upon A Tune by James Mayhew

Key stage 2, Music

This book retells six stories from around the world, all of which have inspired great pieces of music. Our planning focuses on teaching children how music can be used to illustrate a story, characters and settings through tempo, dynamics and choices of instrument. The book can also be used to support your teaching of great composers and the history of music, and stories from different cultures.

If you do storytelling assemblies, this book would provide a full year’s worth of content, with one story and the associated piece of music to focus on each term.
