Book suggestions

This month, we are highlighting two new additions to our collection. While the planning for these books is for a geography and a history unit, they can also be used to enhance children’s understanding of the diverse world we live in. At The Teachers’ Collection, we are passionate about choosing a range of books that provide diverse representations and support own voice authors.

A Gift for Amma by Meera Sriram

Key stage 1, Geography

In this #OwnVoices book inspired by the author’s hometown of Chennai, India, a girl explores the vibrant rainbow of delights in a southern Indian street market as she searches for a gift for her amma (mother). Endnotes explain all the items on sale and introduce readers to markets around the world.

Key stage 2, History

This fascinating book looks at ancient civilisations through the lens of a variety of artefacts, teaching children both about the history of each civilisation and about how archaeologists construct a picture of the past. Each civilisation also has a particular theme linked to either equality, inclusivity or sustainability, helping us learn about these values through the lives of people from the past.
