Book suggestions
This month, we are highlighting two new additions to our collection. While the planning for these books is for a geography and a history unit, they can also be used to enhance children’s understanding of the diverse world we live in. At The Teachers’ Collection, we are passionate about choosing a range of books that provide diverse representations and support own voice authors.
New Books
A Gift for Amma by Meera SriramKey stage 1, Geography In this #OwnVoices book inspired by the author’s hometown of Chennai, India, a girl explores the vibrant rainbow of delights in a southern Indian street market as she searches for a gift for her amma (mother). Endnotes explain all the items on sale and introduce readers to markets around the world. |
Lessons From Our Ancestors by Raksha DaveKey stage 2, History This fascinating book looks at ancient civilisations through the lens of a variety of artefacts, teaching children both about the history of each civilisation and about how archaeologists construct a picture of the past. Each civilisation also has a particular theme linked to either equality, inclusivity or sustainability, helping us learn about these values through the lives of people from the past. |
