August book suggestions

Looking for a book to use for the first few days in September? We’ve chosen two books from our collection we think would be perfect for starting the new year, with lots of cross-curricular opportunities (and both are fun, interesting books).

New Books

Key stage 1, Geography

What if one day the driver turned down a new and exciting road, and picked up new and exciting people? So many people that the bus simply wouldn’t be big enough? Join the exciting bus journey as it travels anywhere and everywhere, growing taller and taller with every adventure!

Our planning shows how to use this book to teach map skills, but there are also lots of opportunities for writing and looking at themes such as diversity and inclusion in response to the story.

The Rabbit Problem by Emily Gravett

Key stage 2, Mathematics

Hop along to Fibonacci’s Field and follow Lonely and Chalk Rabbit through a calendar year as they try to handle different seasonal challenges each month, all while coping with their rapidly expanding brood.

As well as maths and writing activities included in our planning, this book could be used to look at values such as friendship and community. It could also include retrieval of learning about seasons and weather, and about animals in science.
